Why we built a Malayalam learning app

Why did we launch HornbillTalks.com — a fun and intuitive way to learn and practise Malayalam every day.

Start your Malayalam journey with HornbillTalks

A few months back, being NRI Malayalees ourselves, we realised how few frictionless resources existed for anyone — especially children of expats in the 2nd or 3rd generation — to learn Malayalam. Inspired by our own nieces and nephews, my wife and I began working on a solution.

While juggling full-time jobs, we dedicated our evenings to building an app that would make Malayalam learning simple, playful, and accessible. In March 2025, we launched our MVP across a few platforms and focused on Reddit communities passionate about language preservation to gather feedback.

The response was humbling. We've been consistently updating the app every two weeks with improvements.

While we don't claim to solve the problem entirely, we hope HornbillTalks becomes another helpful tool in your learning journey.

Free resources to supplement your learning

In addition to the app, here are some great resources to support your Malayalam learning journey:

YouTube
@ellikutty

Puts serious effort into beginner-friendly videos.

Apps

Ling & Malayalam369

Good for additional structured lessons alongside HornbillTalks.

Book

Learn Malayalam in 30 Days

A solid print reference for learners who prefer a book.

Advice for beginners

We recommend starting with the HornbillTalks app and videos to get familiar with phonetics and everyday expressions. Once you feel confident, you can dive into grammar and longer reading material through books. Consistency over intensity — even 10 minutes a day compounds fast.

"Learning Malayalam is a journey into the heart of Kerala's soul — rich, rhythmic, and rewarding."

The web app is completely free — no ads, no downloads, no sign-ups — and works on phones, tablets, Macs, and maybe even TVs (we haven't tested that yet!). One of us now works full-time on the project while the other contributes part-time, and our roadmap is set for the next two years.

We truly hope you enjoy the experience. If you have any thoughts, suggestions, or feedback, please email us at hornbillchrip@gmail.com — we'd love to hear from you.
